August is the month for dusting off the jam pan. So far the apples have started landing regularly on the lawn. Rather than waste these early fruits they have been transformed into ‘Spiced Apple Jelly’ with just a hint of the old favourite – Chilli! Without a greenhouse at the moment the chillies are slow and few, but the next project, since there are apples a plenty on the tree, is an apple press, it seems the best way to construct one is with a bottle jack and some stout timber, both of which are lying around in the shed! Whether cider is attempted or not rather depends on the juice – it might get drunk too quickly!

I reminded myself of some comments I made whilst being interviewed for the Diocesan Mag this week, namely that I (we) should make time to prepare properly for worship, making time amongst the pressures around. However, breaking my own suggestion, I kind of rushed the sermon on Sunday.

I wonder whether I was too keen to point out that I felt awkward with the passage and its use in being a gatekeeper to the kingdom when really the only judge is God. I’m not sure how it was taken, though there were some kind comments afterwards.

I am sure though that with longer reflection on the passage I would have probably approached it slightly differently.

So, in penance I have decided to re-write, well actually write (I only preached from notes) the sermon out in full. Since I am away for a few days, (see the last post) (it’s dry and warm, no soggy cycling!!) I shall perhaps post it on my return having had a few days to mull it over!!

Juggling

Good practice for ordination I guess. Got back from Iona, one day of family stuff, end of term service to do music for and a few hours later in a car racing off to Liverpool to be involved with Holy Week at St. Anne’s Stanley. It was a fascinating look into parish life during a major festival and the four of us who went had an amazing time. Stanley and stoneycroft, the two parishes served by the clergy we were hosted by are on the edge of areas earmarked for regeneration. We were slightly bemused that one of the main objectives, ready for Liverpool’s year as capital of culture, is to replace all the kerbstones from grey, to grey with shiny bits! Our week was shaped by the Holy Week services, including visiting Liverpool Cathedral for Evensong and the Chrism Mass, we also had time to catch up with friends and even (for two of us) a quick trip on the Mersey Ferry!
