August is the month for dusting off the jam pan. So far the apples have started landing regularly on the lawn. Rather than waste these early fruits they have been transformed into ‘Spiced Apple Jelly’ with just a hint of the old favourite – Chilli! Without a greenhouse at the moment the chillies are slow and few, but the next project, since there are apples a plenty on the tree, is an apple press, it seems the best way to construct one is with a bottle jack and some stout timber, both of which are lying around in the shed! Whether cider is attempted or not rather depends on the juice – it might get drunk too quickly!

the spinning wheel that wasn’t made in one day

Well the spinning wheel is now done, finally!! The problem was the bearing for the main wheel, I salvaged one from a bicycle pedal eventually!!

I am now drawing out plans for the next one, neater, tidier etc.

Of course all you spinning wheel enthusiasts will notice the deliberate mistake…

Rumi

Strange that I should be reading from a Islamic Mystic at this time. Seriously though, we (those of us who do care how our fellow travellers are treated) should all read a bit of Islamic material – beats a lot of the the trashy Christian stuff I get to read. Not sure what it is about it, just seems so sincere. Anyway, Rumi. One Morning while working in Bangor, the Chaplain (John) had been doing Zen as usual and had left a note on the desk… Is there a God? Well I replied with some quirky remark now lost in the depths of recycling, but yesterday while reading Rumi came up with a far better answer. Why should I seek? I am the same as he.
