The hedgerows are teeming with life, most of it edible, we have so far (apart from the tree load of apples which our garden supplies) blackberries – loads, hedge garlic (still prolific) raspberry leaves for tea, haws for Haw-sin sauce and a few other bits and pieces. In a few weeks the elderberries will be ready, the damsons up the lanes will start to turn and it will be all hands to the preserving pan, if only the apples would stop falling long enough for us to pick some to put away!! The wheat is in, but not processed quite yet, it will have to be milled soon, ready for the beginning of October and the coming of the inevitable Harvest Thanksgivings. The Cardiff Bay Lightship

In 1988 the churches in Cardiff were called together by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation to discuss the role of Christianity in the bay area. The churches were seen as playing an important part in the community and should be involved at the very hub of the new developments. To this end Helwick LV14 was purchased and restoration begun to create a floating Christian Centre.

The Lightship provides a bold central focus for the Churches of Wales and will be home to a centre for counselling, worship, exhibitions, meetings, a book shop, refreshment area and the cabins will be used for small residential stays, especially designed for youth groups.

Last Sunday

I get picked up at 7.30am, driven like a rally to another car which then speeds off towards the first of the days parishes. Arriving about an hour early, (due to travelling logistics) I am greeted heartily by a large black Labrador, an indifferent cat and a jovial vicar. It is shortly after 8am – I have no concept of humour at this hour! Both churches we are to go to are miles apart, and miles from where we are. However the journey is a short one due to the speed and relative skill the vicar pelts round the small one track roads Most of the congregation are from the near vicinity he remarks as we slide to a halt outside a quaint, ancient church. It is hard to see how they could be from anywhere else other than the near vicinity, we have just driven up and down any number of rather steep hills, and it appears that only a few of the congregation are able to drive.
