Candlemas Bells

If there were a flower for prophecy it
would be the snow-white bells arriving
early in time for Candlemas arrogant
even a brash flower cutting through the
cold earth it comes resilient, hardy.
Beauty beguiles its strength.
Amidst the darkness expectant of the
warmth to come our instinct is to light
candles. An incandescent dream.
Inefficient of light but life enough to stir
the soul into speaking. The snowdrop
harbinger of those who hear the silent
call to defiance of convention.

Candlemass

Half-way out of the dark?  So The Doctor proclaimed on Christmas day, now we are half way out of the dark, Candlemass marking the halfway point towards the spring equinox.  Always a time for celebration and an appropriate time to make a promise for the year,  much better than at the turn of the year when bellies are full of purkey and tooding.  With St. Brigit just over our shoulder shedding a spirit of poetry, writing and creativity, Light a candle, write your promise to yourself and seal it in an envelope.  Open it when the sun is high in the sky and talk of frost is a distant memory.

Epiphany

It’s still Epiphany – two weeks to go, so why are people in so much of a hurry to take down the seasonal decorations? – I’m holding out for Candlemass…
