August is the month for dusting off the jam pan. So far the apples have started landing regularly on the lawn. Rather than waste these early fruits they have been transformed into ‘Spiced Apple Jelly’ with just a hint of the old favourite – Chilli! Without a greenhouse at the moment the chillies are slow and few, but the next project, since there are apples a plenty on the tree, is an apple press, it seems the best way to construct one is with a bottle jack and some stout timber, both of which are lying around in the shed! Whether cider is attempted or not rather depends on the juice – it might get drunk too quickly!

Any fool can make things complicated

E.F. Schumacher said that:

“Any fool can make things complicated, but it requires a genius to make things simple.”

Satish Kumar quoted this in Resurgence Then went on to say that

“Simplicity requires less ego and more imagination, less complication and more creativity, less glamour and more gratitude, less attention to appearance and more attention to essence.”

On the basis on E. F. Schumacher’s thinking there have I guess been a very small number of geniuses in the world of religion, George Fox perhaps, a Desert Father or two, oh and of course our dear Lord Jesus! Looking forward to next Sunday’s Gospel reading, John 10: 11-18 and indeed the Genesis reading, a good dose of simplicity would suit all around!

Last Wednesday

Recycling. specifically relative recycling. Relative to what? Well no not that sort of relative, your granny, and old dear of some description. Yes we were somehow discussing these issues, I think it began when we tried to out wierd the local vicar You may think that we have spoken of this before, and you would be right, but this time it went all the way, right up to discussion of whether or not anyone would guess when discussing the issue What we actually did today, (that was of some benefit, not just the faffing about!) was to discuss the ways in which a big organisation which raises funds and gets funding from various bodies, drags all the funding towards itself, uses the money in strange and wonderful schemes, some of which work, some not, then help out all the other charities and small organisations to get funding, but wait it’s all gone – to where?!!! The afternoon was very pleasant, two villages one dead one alive, one with a dodgy graveyard, one with a million bookshops, (39 actually) oh and a rather nice deli, a number of posh boutiques and a rather good coffee shop!
